What is your definition of "reasonably close to an airport"? I have heard people joke that in Texas, anything within 3 hours is "close" (lol!).
Pretty much anywhere in New England you will be within an hour, certainly within 2 hours, of a large airport. In northern New England you are starting to get away from airports.
Northern New York, there is Lake George and at its northern end is Fort Ticonderoga, which I highly recommend if you have any interest in colonial history.
