We have dual heat pumps. We use them all winter as we hardly ever got below 40 degrees. They work as advertised. If you are going to be in cold weather then you will use your furnace more.

Not a deal breaker either way. An electric fireplace or space heater can deliver electric heat just as well.Heat pumps have a bit of an efficiency advantage in a stick house however in an RV there really is no energy rebate vs. a simple space heater.

Heat pumps are effective in moderately cold weather a space heater will work in really cold weather.

A heat pump can provide more even centralized heat vs.the room to room direct heat of a space heater.

Tom has the best answer to your question. Heat pumps are great. You get free heat at most campgrounds. Here in the south, most of the year the heat pump is all you need.KB

Heat pumps are not for really cold weather - as noted above, they work down to the upper 30's to 40 degrees.

Our last three RV's have had heat pumps and we used them a lot. Although some campgrounds charge extra for electric heat, most do not. Thus, one gets "free" heat using the heat pump as opposed to the propane furnaces.

On our last two RV's the heat pumps were in the basement. On our current one, the heat pumps are on the roof. I don't yet know what that will mean as far as noise level. I think I will enjoy running the front heat pump and leaving the bedroom one off, while we sleep.

We use ours on cool mornings for a few minutes just to take the chill out of the air. You'll appreciate having it.

Sorry, TXiceman, under the right conditions they do work that way. If the humidity is low ours will produce meaningful heat down to 30 degrees. I'm not saying its cost effective but we don't often pay for electric.
boringram, if you camp in cooler weather often and on site included electric the heatpump will pay for itself.

A heat pump is a reverse cycle A/C unit. They will work pretty well in cooler weather, but a useless once the outside ambient reaches 40 degF. I hear storeis of people claiming that they run them down into the 20's but they do not work that way.

It would be on the plus side if I were getting an RV to have a heat pump.

We use ours all the time. It gives out a nice heat and is not very noisy with a ducted A/C Heat Pump. When the temp falls closer to freezing in the night the furnace kicks in automatically and in the morning when the temp rises again the heat pump comes back on.

I have one on my Alpenlite. I do like it, but use it rarely. I do live in a cold weather region, but most heat pumps don't run much below about 40 degrees. Basically it uses a heating coil to heat air through the A/C unit, so it makes the same sound as running the A/C, and has a high energy draw like the A/C, so you either have to have hookups or a generator to run it. It heats the RV faster that the furnace. I like it, but my wife hates it because it is also louder than the furnace. If they all have it it's worth it.
