Heating hub on my fifth wheel

I have neverlube axles. Towing this week one wheel heated up noticeably and (monitored) tire pressure jumped up too high. I figured a bearing or stuck caliper. When jacked up the wheel in question shows no wiggle, either left-right or top bottom which I would think it would if a bad bearing? Also wheel seems to move the same as its tandem partner. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
  • Thanks for the responses. It sounds like caliper may be the trouble spot.
Durb: How will I know if bearing is bad once hub is removed? Ive had hubs off before, but I have no idea what Im looking for. I have weighed in the past with full tank of water I come in at about 17.2 with pin weight of just under 4K
  • I would pull the drum and visually inspect the NevRlube bearing, You will know right away if you have a failure. Since you have minimum runout and the wheel runs smooth I would suspect the brakes. My same bearings run extremely cool, a shade over ambient.

You have a heavy trailer and other Mobile Suites owners have reported failures. The 50mm bearing you have are only rated for 8,000# axles and appear to have not as much safety margin as a standard bearing. One member here has a MS that tows at 22k#, a number which would severely overload your bearings. There is a YouTube around that shows an Elite Suites with failed NevRlubes. He blamed the bearings, not the fact that they were overloaded. If you do have a failure you may want to weigh your axles and make sure you aren't towing too heavy.

50mm NevRlube bearing retention nuts are torqued to 150 ft-lbs. Bearing play is pre-loaded. Removing a drum with the bearing pressed in is easy and generally mess free. Good luck.
  • Disc I presume since you said caliper, disc brakes. Make sure the caliper is releasing.

  • Brake could be adjusted too tight. Bearing retaining nut could be adjusted too tight.
