Hitching At an Angle

Was wondering if it is OK to hitch a 5th from and angle? (not uneven ground but from the side) If so how steep of an angle is exceptable?

  • I have a Reese Revolution Pin box. If I unhitch at an angle I hitch back up on the same angle to set the wedge easy.
  • No problem hitching or unhitching on an angle. As mentioned above, having the height of the 5th wheel is important as to not put any stress on the landing gear. The other thing I like to do is back about 2 foot farther then I need and pull forward 2 feet to take the sideward stain of the tires and axles. Being 40 foot long and 3 axles there's not many times I get to be straight on.

  • Normally when you hitch you want the trailer to ride up on the plate to ensure you don't have a high hook. The force is straight back onto the trailers tires. If you try that from an angle, the trailer legs act to hold the trailer still while you couple. You need to have your pin height at exactly the height of your hitch so you don't lift the trailer off its landing gear, causing it to slide away from the truck and land sideways on the landing gear or end up with a high hook. It can be done but you need to be really careful.
  • I have hooked up the trailer at more than an 80 degree approach angle (with a Stromberg cut-down tailgate).

Just go easy and do not push the landing legs sideways.

Did I mention "Just go easy"???
  • If the angle is fairly acute, remember to not back in too hard. You could damage your landing gear.
  • Just make sure your tailgate doesn't hit the trailer while backing under the pin. Have your spotter close your tailgate as it comes under the pin. Been there, done that but luckily it was minor damage.
  • I hitch at what ever angle is necessary. If I can hitch it I will. Sometimes I have to really crank it to get where I want. Then I unhitch. That is what usually happens. That is when you will be at your biggest angle. I have been in real extreme angles without causing a problem. I don't see hitching at angle a very common problem. It would be the unhitching that gets a little crazy. JMHO
