Check the specs on the tire you are thinking of buying, they should list diameter, then check what the diameter of the tire you presently have. Even though a tire may show the same size, i.e. 235/85x16, they may not be the same physical size. Your best bet is to measure your present tire and go from there. And don't forget to consider suspension travel when figuring overhead clearance.
I went from 235/80x16 and 3 1/2 inches of clearance to 235/85x16 and now have about an 2 inches of clearance.
