There is a lot better way. Learn to use your mirrors to line up to the trailer, and practice, practice, practice. I just back up really slow till I feel a bump. Then I get out to make sure I am at the right height. After that I just back in until I hit the pin good and tight. At this time I set the parking brake to hold the truck tight against the trail. Next I get out and make sure the hitch is locked. Last thing is to get back in and give a tug to double check.
It helps that I had a few years of practice moving semi trailers around a steel yard.
