I personally think the once a year deal is a CYA.
Sure it will not hurt anything.
I ran my flatbed for 10 years after purchase. I got paranoid and pulled all the wheels, did the bearings and replaced the seals. All looked like new when i pulled them. That was 5 years ago.
However i would CYA and not sadvise anyone to follow suit. :W
