I would say after 2-3 years condition trumps age.
We found a 97 back in 2007. Been full time 50% of the time and no major issues. The only item that has failed is the gear on one of the landing legs ($100 fix for a guy to come out and take care of it). Otherwise it's just normal maintenenace (new tires, brakes, resealing the roof). We found out from friends after the fact that they previous owner was known as mister clean, so we got lucky with a very well maintained unit.
For $4k, we can afford some major repairs and still come out way ahead of a new unit.
