How to know if fresh water tank is full?

I usually don't let it go until water comes out the vent to avoid the possibility of over pressurizing the tank. I sometimes will check the gauge until it shows `full' then go out to the tank inlet (from an outside source) and listen for the sound pitch to increase which tells me the tank is close to full. It takes a couple of times to know how high the pitch will be toward the end.
