For those new to this fifth wheel stuff it is confusing. I think I am closer to understanding...
My 2500hd 6.0 gasser with 3.73 gears has a gvw of 9500...
My truck weighs 7200
Gives me 2300 lbs of possible payload
200 for fifth wheel, 400 people, stuff 300= 900
Now my payload max Is 1400 lbs
Pin weight @20% of trailer gvw! that gives me (1400/.20)= 7000lbs
Not a lot of fifth wheels weigh that little...
Same truck with 4.10 gears gives you a gvw of 13400lbs
Doesn't make sense that putting different gears gives you that much of an increase in gvw. I understand the 4.10s will let me tow more and more efficiently but how will the exact same truck handle that higher pin weight? 2400 lbs.
My fiver weighs 7700 dry and 11000+ maxed out? Giving me a potential 2200 lb pin weight....doubt I have ever had it to 10000. I plan on weighing it before my next trip.
We plan an Alaskan adventure next year so this discussion has my attention.
Any and all insight appreciated.
How are you on the RAWR? That's the number I would worry about more than GVWR. At least until someone explains "pickup math" to me. Then again you didn't say how old your PU is. The older were more conservatively rated.
