Hurricane Prep

What can I do to better protect my 5th wheel in possible cat. 3- cat. 5 hurricane? I want to use it in case lost of power. Hook it to my truck? We live about 60 miles from beach in eastern NC. Thanks.
  • Folks, this is a senior member, been a member 10 years, I assume not a kid thats never been through a storm since he lives in Eastern NC.
I dont know his situation, and I doubt all of you do. He may have a farm and livestock and therefore cant leave, he may be military stationed there at Camp Lejune or Cherry Point, If he could bug out, and wanted to bug out, its a fairly safe bet he will bug out.
The question was what to do to ride it out.
Any other ideas on how to help with that?
  • Definitely would hook up and head out. I live in FL, full-time, and that is what I do. No way do I even want to stay in a Cat. 1.. much less Cat 3-5.
I fill my truck's gas tank and keep it that way.
  • An RV would probably bounce around in an earthquake, but a hurricane picks things up and throws them. stock the RV get the important papers and leave. Do not wait until the last Minuit, leave a the first hint that it will hit your area. If you wait you might get in a monster traffic jam. Next might be all kinds of people asking to use your rest room..Do you want that ?? Please folks my daughter / son really needs to go, now what do you say ? Leave early avoid the rush....

Make reservations now in the mountains for next weekend as the next one is headed for NC. You have wheels under it for a reason.
  • Be ready to bug out. Prep your RV. Prep your house. Transfer critical documents, pets, electronics, and a good supply of medications and clothing to your RV.

And have good insurance on all your property and belongings.

Detailed bug out instructions are on tons of sites.
  • Insurance is the best protection. I am not and insurance salesman.

Assuming it is possible, I would hook that 5th. wheel and go as far as necessary to get out the Cat. 3 & 5. By definition, trailers and 5th wheels are not designed to safely handle cat 3 cat 5 hurricane:(
  • Hitch up, Fill your water tank, if you have an onboard genny, make sure its fully fueled. Hurricanes rotate in a counter clockwise direction, so look at the forcast when it gets close. If your 60 miles inland, say Washington, Williamston, and the storm appears to be passing to your east, hitch your truck to your 5er, and point them NE. You want the front of the truck pointing towards the EXPECTED strongest winds. If it changes tracks>>>> the best laid plans ,,,,,if you want to roll inland, the COE parks and the state parks on Kerr are going to be almost empty after the labor day weekend.
  • Fully stock it..have it packed and ready then GO!

Do NOT stay---try to ride it out.

    GET OUT...ASAP.
