Ideas for protecting my hitch from theft

I had my pickup in for some service and the mechanic along with another customer pointed out to me that I needed to protect my new 5th wheel hitch from being stolen. I had not considered this threat before now, but with the number of drug addicts and low lifes around, I guess I should take some precaution.

If you have yours locked down, how did you do it? Mine has these four pins that keep the hitch attacked to the bottom rails.I don't see any way of chaining it down.

It's a Curt 20,000lb model.

  • Mine is locked under a solid cover. So first part is out of site, out of mind. Second is a decent lock on the cover.
  • I asked a similar question a year or so ago. The general concensus was 5er hitches are pretty heavy and cumbersome. Scumbags probably aren't interested in the time it takes to remove them or the physical strength one has to posess to move them.

I have a locking pin on one side to keep the head attached to the hitch. Another thing could be add a locking pin to the base that attaches to the bed rails.
  • Some people weld tabs onto them so that they can be padlocked.

I have a hard bed cover that locks.

(edit to add) Though, that's not why I have the bed cover. I have that because I wanted it. I figure my hitch is heavy and would be a hassle to be stolen. That's enough for me.
