We have 7 pin connectors both in front of the wheel well, driver's side, and in the standard bumper position. I've had more than a couple of instances over the past few years where the cord has gotten hung up on the hitch and other items carried in the truck bed. The last time, it got hung up so bad by the hitch that the plug was pulled out and the insulation on the cord, skinned. Since then, I've taken to using the standard bumper connector with no problems. If I were to do it again, I'd put it at the rear of the bed, a foot or so from the tailgate.
