In the bed harness connection

I don't have my trailer as yet but want to install the connector/harness. I can put it at floor level right at the tailgate where it might bet beat up, just to the rear of the wheel well about mid level where I can still just reach it, above the wheel well where I can reach over the side to get to it, or up by the cab where I can also reach up over the side. Is any one spot better then the rest? I'm taking it the drivers side is fine.

  • I would not put it at floor lively, you could have issues with rain water
  • My Ford ready plug is at rear of bed, maybe 1/4th to 1/2 up from floor. At 5' 2" tall this is the best location for me. Too, many times I've had to get a ladder to reach over the side of bed and down to try and plug. When the plug is toward the front of the bed I just can't reach it with out really working.

mine is the same, but when plugged in, neither connector works!..
if I slightly turn the harness side, and hold it with 2 hands, then both connectors will work..

the stock connector by itself works every time.

  • The Ford factory install is higher on the fender, but it has a big surround plastic box that extends the depth (at least on the super duty).

I ended up going high, right next to the tailgate above the taillight. Plenty of depth on the super duty anyway, and it was a snap to remove the taillight to route the wiring down to bumper. I bought the type that is prewired with a T-tap that intercepts the bumper plug in the back so both work.

I had to go where I am because I have the factory bed extender racks that fold up in the space behind the fender well. The spot actually turned out to be ideal to reach when hooking up.

My last 3 trucks have been the same, midway between tailgate and wheel-well and 8 or 10 inches above bed floor. high enough to protect form dump/landscape loads and access from rear or over rail (assuming rail is not high).

That is where my Ford factory installed connector is located.

  • The spots I listed are where I have enough room, pretty limited.
  • make sure u know how much space into the fenderwell the bedside connector needs. I cut my first hole too high.

I also have a dickens of a time getting the T connector to make good connections at the stock connector. I have two of the same harnesses (Hopkins 41157) and both show the same problem.
