Installing Onan generator in a Fifth Wheel

It is pre-wired for a generator. So, we found a great deal on a used Onan 7000 and need to install it. I'm assuming we need to service/maintenance the used genny we bought. Can we install it ourselves or should we have this professionally done? If we can do it ourselves what's the process? Do we need to put something in for vibration? What type of fuel tank do we need and where to get one, etc, etc, etc... Your advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Also, is there a forum just for Heartland and/or Big Country owners??

This a gas or propane generator? If you are mechanically inclined its doable.

Well here's our story...We ordered our current 5'er (see sig) with a generator prep and without the genset. We wanted a 6500W propane genset but the factory only offered a 5500W genset. We bought and stalled a new 6500W Onan propane generator a year after we took delivery of our 5'er. We hired a professional RV/Marine generator installer/repairman to install our generator. We were very, very glad we did. The amount of time and energy it took the installer's to complete the job (a full day), not to mention wrestling a 300lb generator into a small genset compartment, and dealing with the factory prep "D" Mark locations where wires for the remote starter switch and hour meter were supposed to be...but weren't, I'd say what we paid for the install was a huge bargain. We had friends who offered to help us install out genset. That would have been such a huge mistake. Good luck.

Before you purchase your used genset, make sure it's thoroughly checked out and run under a full load by a Cummins/Onan repair center. Unless you already know for sure it's been maintained properly and produces the correct amount of power at the correct RPM, please do yourself a favor and have the genset evaluated before buying and installing it.
