An exhaust brake will certainly be a nice thing to have on my next truck. I have no exhaust brake on a F350 with 6.4 diesel, 5-speed automatic (I notice that yours is 7.3 diesel); weight of truck with fiver is 20,500 lbs.
My combination holds 9% grades without dragging the brake, BUT I have to be in low gear. Brakes on truck and trailer have not needed replacement after six seasons of towing. So it is possible to do a Rocky Mountain trip without exhaust brake. Just slow down and get into gear BEFORE starting down any long grade.
