We've been thinking of moving to a 5th wheel for a few months. Even with our F150 with 2100 payload, there's still not a lot. Cougars were out for us since the lightest pin wt. was about 1400 and I think the overall weight seemed high. Looked at Flagstaff lights, there are a few that start around 1200 but not to our liking. Seriously considering an Open Range LF297RLS.
We've weighed our truck ready to travel and have about 1650 available on GVWR and 1950 on RAWR. Not a ton of wiggle room but based on our packing and type of travel we think this unit may be doable. One thing, the Open Range allows a Gooseneck hitch. We can install a B&W turnover ball (95 lbs.) and save some weight on the hitch.
All this being said, it's tight but we have not found a TT to our liking and I don't want to pull a 35 ft. TT.
Do your homework, be realistic with weights and my absolute rule will be to never go over RAWR. Hopefully my calculations will allow us to actually stay within GVWR. Not a done deal yet but have discussed with other F150 owners pulling same unit, all have good experiences.
