Yep, it's the manufacturers fault. They are so stupid that they have no clue about what they designed and built. Only the "experts" on RV.net who know absolutely nothing about designing and building vehicles words are bible. The manufacturers cannot be trusted, they lie in their printed info when they rate their vehicles as to how much their vehicles can tow. Every new truck owner should throw away the manual first thing and then log onto RV.net for their factual information. Check, got that.
Yes, I would say a lot of it rest with the manufacture and their marketing department. Lets all remember it is the job of the manufacture to make money! While they don't out right lie, they do stretch the truth.
#1. The advertised Payload and towing capacity, is for the Base stripper truck, of the model rated. Anything added to the truck directly reduces both numbers, some take a good size chunk.
#2 The advertised Dry weight of the 5er less any options, and is already low to start with.
#3 the advertised pin weight is also dry, and starts going up as soon as the battery and propane is added.
#4. The sales persons job is to sell the 5er, with few exceptions the sales man will say "Sure your 1/2 ton will tow it".
#5. I don't know of a 5er that will tow well with a 10% pin!! 15% to 20% is more realistic!
