is it safe?

Last night an F150 Eco boost pulled into the campground towing a Chaparral Signature 327RLKS. That seems a bit much for that truck. Looks to have a 1980# pin and a GVCR of 11900# at nearly 38' long. My fiver in sig is at 13200 at last weigh in and I'm using a dually. I know its not my business but that would scare the******out of me towing that setup. On his back window of his truck it said Fire Chief so I'd assume he knows what he's doing. Anyway, back to the campfire and watching the storms on the otherwise of the lake. Happy camping all.

  • That RV would destroy that TV if he had to do a panic stop/lane change or a gust of wind hit him.

One very weak link is the soft sidewalls on his tires.

This stuff makes me sick! If it were only endangering him I would not care but he is endangering the rest of his family and all of us.

GET A PROPER TV FOR YOUR RV!!!!!!!!!!!
  • We spent most of the winter comparing shopping...
Problem I found is that the F150 Eco boost's claims are engine related only.
As many have pointed out... proper set up should start with the tv rating ...then work on the power train.
We ended up factory ordering an F250 tv for our 10.5 lbs 5th wheel.

  • Sure it is safe, as long it doesn't move.

If I saw that on a highway, I would move away.
  • like driving a screw in with a hammer.....it works but it's the wrong tool for the job.
  • I would guess that the Fire Chief may be very good at putting out fires.Maybe not so good at picking out TVs.
  • I try not to pass judgement on others setups. We almost always dont have all the correct numbers and its always easy to look and say "I wouldnt do that" without all the facts.
He was prolly safe with the setup.
  • "eco-boost" means nothing. If it was F150-HD with ~3,000 payload I would call it maxed out but good to go.

Well I personally don't like towing something that big with a F150, BUT if it was a Max/Max with 7 lug axles (4,800# rating), and a light load in the 5er and the truck, he might be within all the limits.

That said the reason it might be within ratings is the light weight of the F150, (just wait for the aluminum body come out and add 750# to the F150 GVWR). I think the issue comes with the light weight TV, and the lightweight running gear and suppression.
Did the driver look relaxed when he got of the TV??

I tow over my GVWR, but well within my axle ratings (try that with an F150 Max/Max). I have a 2005 Copper Canyon 293FWSLS Dry 9,820 GVWR 12,360 wet about 11,000#. I feel comfortable towing this with our 2001 Ram 2500, but the truck has one ton springs, so has no need for bags.
  • I wouldnt even think of it. I have a similar sized rig. Pin weight is 2400 loaded. I used to tow it with a 3/4 ton but was exceeding payload. My 1 ton SRW is a perfect fit. I Couldnt imagine towing with a 1/2 ton. I dont care what tow package it has.
  • With a dry weight over 10K... In my opinion its not safe, and I certainly wouldn't do it....
