It's all about balance. The water tank is usually up front on TH's too. That's so you can fill it up and stuff the back and still have a balanced load.
Being a couple hundred pounds over GVWR in any vehicle is not going to implode on you... I'd be more concerned about the rear axle weight and the tire loads than the GVWR of the truck..
You probably have a #4050 rear GAWR and if you still have the stock P rated tires, you don't have a lot of wiggle room, but your tires load rating should be more than the axle rating anyway.
I got some XL rated tires for my truck and they have a #2800 max load rating on them, far exceeding the #4050 axle rating...
