We had the same (though not as dramatic) experience my first time boondocking in AZ desert out of Quartzsite. I'm with your wife.....ARRRGH! However, we stayed put and waited for the ground to dry out and all was okay. Another camper, in a rented Class C, tried to drive out and ended up stuck. :( :(
