Yes glue and thin Brad nails 1 and 2"... I basically used them to hold the 2x2s in place while the wood dried and the framing could be built around it to secure it in place. I didn't want to try putting screws through the 2x2s because I knew it would split.
I put a stainless steel screw through the 2x4s everywhere I had a solid chance too.
From the factory they use a 2x4 on the bottom of the fram with two 2x2s stacked on top of it... I didn't really see the point so I used a 2x8 and bolted it to the frame with stainless carriage bolts. Did the same thing on the front but because of the I beam in the frame you have to use 2x4s... They fit nice and snug in there too.
