ib516 what is your overall height with the boat on the top of the fiver?

we carried our hard shell kayaks on our truck for 7 years. last year we sold truck and got a jeep grand cherokee which was too short to carry the kayaks. we sold them and bought 2 inflatables. they are terrific. they are strong (i feel safe-even just kayaked in the louisian bayous where alligators were known to be present), and they track very well. i truly see no negatives compared to our perception kayaks.
i would highly recommend inflatables for a)ease of blowing up b)tracking c) convenient to carry and store
the only down side we found is drying them off so they can be stored. you probably need to keep them out for a few hours before putting back in their bags.
the brand we bought was advanced elements from an online company called air kayak-they were extremely helpful and had the best price. if you do purchase them, i would recommend the upgraded floor-much more stability and more comfortable!

ps...we're headed to crysal river florida tomorrow---anybody have any good kayaking or road biking information? thanks!

I built a rack on my RV roof using gas pipe. $40 from Home Depot.

This is great ! Thanks for all the ideas. To all of you enjoying those yaks in the warm weather right now I just got home from work, it's 13 degrees and dropping, winds are 25 mph. Enjoy that warm weather for me. I'll be ther next year ! Thanks again.

I have a 2500 CC LB and two 9'6" kayaks. They're two short to use the front hitch type carrier along with the single rack on the trucks roof. I had to DIY a headache rack and go with a Thule single rack. Just an FYI on kayak length.

WE carry our 8ft kayaks and bikes on the rear. My Son and I built the hitch and kayak racks , they are bolted onto the hitch cross tube so they can be removed if were not talking them with us about 1500 miles so far and no problems.

I carry a 10' boat (old setup) on top and it fits on the rack evenly above the cab.

Have you considered a Toy Hauler since you are still in the looking stage? Then you have a garage to store them nice and secure.
