Keystone Fail-Sky River RV Fail

We bought our new 2015 Raptor 300 toy hauler in August of 2014 from Sky River RV, Paso Robles Ca. Back in February I was up on the roof and I noticed that the roof around the front A/C was cut on both sides. The cuts were the same shape as the metal pan on the bottom of the A/C unit. You could tell that air had gotten under the roof membrane and it lifted up and was cut by the metal of the A/C pan. Sky River contacted Keystone about warranty repair. Sky River wanted to replace the roof, but Keystone only wanted to patch it. Sky River said they were not going to replace the roof out of their pocket, since it was obviously a factory problem. They repaired it per Keystone's instructions.Really, that's what you call a repair? One of the tech's said they never repair roofs, just replace them? Well you just tried to repair one and it is the worst job I've seen and I've wrenched for over 40 years. And did you find out why it was lifting up in the first place? No. So you have Keystone who won't back it's product, and Sky River who won't back it's customers up. And on top of all that, when we get it home, there's a 2 foot piece of slide trim laying on the floor.

  • Camper will be 2 years old in August so out of warranty period although it is obvious this is a factory defect and should be repaired by the factory with a new roof.

I am not familiar with the type of "pan" you have on that AC but all that I have seen have a foam cushion and are held down by bolts through the roof and no lip such as yours. If that is your AC that would explain why the roof is cut because of the bouncing that would occur going down the road.

It is also obvious that the dealer has no idea how to repair and would never see my camper again. Looks like no screws were used during installation. I would check carefully for damage to the wood, clean the Dicor off, attach with screws, cover with Eternabond and lay a bead of self-leveling Dicor along the seams.

I don't believe you need a new roof, just use some Eternabond, it's great stuff. Make the dealer fix it properly or do it yourself (which is what I'd do).

On the same note, we are all pretty much in agreement that there is no quality control in the RV business. The people that work on the roof, especially, seem to know that nobody will be checking their work.

I agree on all points. I wouldn't trust that patch for more than about 3-6 months. If it were me, I'd document all discussions with both Keystone and you dealer, then lay some Eternabond patches down on top of the existing patch.

The good news is that adding an additional patch should be simple and only take about 45 minutes, assuming you can easily get up on your roof.

  • Thanks for posting this - I'm going to be checking my roof tomorrow to make sure mine isn't doing the same thing. It sounds like we have the same raptor.
  • Aside from being a terrible repair they also cheesed out on the amount of dicor used.
  • If the roof is lifting it will just cut it again, I guess they are just trying to get it past warranty period.
