Within the last week a co-worker had his VERY expensive toy-hauler stolen from his 'secure' RV storage facility. Security camera footage revealed the thieves needing 30+ minutes to break through the gate, but less than 5 min to leave with his trailer (he was obviously targeted).He said he had a pin lock on board but did not use it in the storage lot. How many of you use a king pin lock? Do you feel it provides genuine security? I am aware that some of you use protection by Smith&Wesson, no need to go there.

I have one a I use it in my storage facility. In reality...How long will it take to cut it off with a high speed cordless grinder?? 2-3 minutes and it belongs to them...Don't put too much faith in a lock of any kind. If somebody wants it they have it...B.O.

Well, if they took over 30 minutes just to gain entry, and had his toyhauler targeted, then I don't think a pin lock would have done much good. It sounds like they were pretty serious. Of course if it took them 30 minutes to get in they might be pretty inept and just grabbed the nearest trailer they could get away with. In that case the pin lock might have done some good.

And they may have targeted his unit because there wasn't a lock on it? And as others said, they might have gotten into it anyway, but the longer it takes them, the better the chances are that they'll get caught while in the yard.Bill

Hell, I use my lock in my driveway. I once saw a truck with a fifth wheel hitch in the bed driving up our private road looking down the driveways, looking for stuff to steal. When they saw me in my driveway, they promptly left the subdivision.

I lock my pin when I'm out camping. Not because I'm concerned that someone might steal my RV, but because my friends are tools and would move it as a joke. I'd wake up with a crashing hangover to find that my fifth wheel is parked on a giant raft in the middle of a lake.

I use a bicycle lock with a coated cable. Cable fits in grove of king pin and drawn up tight it is a tight fit. Cheap.

Mine is locked whenever it's not hitched to the truck. Like others have said, just make it harder to steal than others, and the thieves will leave it alone. Way too many with no lock on them in the storage lot for someone to mess with one that is locked. Thieves are lazy and in a hurry, so they will almost always take the quick, easy way.

This is the one I use. Not pretty but all steel & relatively hard to grind off. Agree that all it really does is send the bad guys to someone else.

If you have a battery onboard and it is connected, the brakes will be on all the time if you pulled the break-away cord. I'm sure you knew that, just a heads-up in case of a brain phart. :)

Thanks EPENDYDAD,

Just placed my order for the Husky Lock. My wife thought she saw someone checking out our camper who was driving in an old dually yesterday. I pulled the safety break cord thinking that might deter as the electric brakes should engage as soon as they plug in , but this should add a couple of extra minutes if anyone tries to steal.
Plus my wife won't worry about this anymore......priceless..... :)

X2, that's what I do as well....if a thief really wants it, they'll find a way to steal it---might as well make it more difficult to slow them down

Of course, if they get ahold of the lower half of a pin box, they can simply unbolt your pin box and bolt on the replacement in a few minutes and be on thier way. Totally bypassing the pin lock.

Buy insurance and use a different yard if they could spend 30 minutes breaking in with no one noticing.
