Landing gear failure

We took out some trees to make more room for a shop and rv cover but when I went to move the thing the legs started acting funny, finally got it on the truck and into the driveway but the driver's side leg would not hold weight so pulled out the jack stands and floor jack to free the truck.

Took it to the shop and they say the leg failed and it will be close to $900 to fix, the part is supposed to be about $200.

This is a 2010 unit so not that old but, I found a small bolt that was bent laying below the motor, tried reading about the rebuild but decided it was more than I wanted to deal with.

They had to remove the propane rack and there's a thin wall in front of the motor so lots of work just getting to the problem and when they had to pull the tube it needed to be raised fairly high in order to remove.

My truck is pretty high as far as the bed goes and I always use blocks to use less travel on the legs so I guess I need to pay real close attention to how I'm operating these but anyone else have these issues on a 7-8 year old rig?
  • lol don't really mean to laugh but the same thing happened to us last March when we were packing up to leave the C/G. broke the shear pin on the left front landing gear. Managed to get the 5'er loaded and home. Called Lippert Components, Ordered a "New leg" $ 175.00 and had a local repair shop replace for $ 150.00, took them about 2 hrs. Watched them do the repair and the next time, if there is a next time will do myself. The difficult thing like you found out is getting it up high enough to replace it. Good Luck and Happy Camping !!
  • What was the failure? Broken bevel gear, reduction gear, or stripped screw? Landing gear do need occasional lube and make sure you don't over extend them but should last a lifetime.
  • I have replaced the legs twice on my 25 yr old Prowler, both times due to over extending/retraction (I now have a 3 inch white paint mark on the leg top and bottom of travel).

If all that is wrong was a shear pin falling out that is a $0.50 part. It is the most common failure in my experience. I carry spare shear pins although I have used nails for a temporary fix. My connector rod between the legs is the culprit most of the time when it is a shear pin falling out.

If the gears are ate up/shot then they can be fairly cheaply replaced also ($50 on Amazon link)--depending on how accessible they are. The motor is the expensive part to replace and remount. Especially, if you cannot find an exact replacement motor that will attach to the gear in the same position as the old one.

It is not a hard job but it does take time and being careful to remount the legs where they hold up the frame.
  • I order all new heavier duty landing gears, when mine broke, for my previous Fleetwood Prowler 5th. This company was great to deal with and pricing was pretty good.

  • I kept breaking the shear bolt in mine and thought I would have to upgrade to a dual motor setup. I decided to first try drilling holes in the tubes and shot some lithium grease directly on the worm gear. Now it works like a champ. I lube them about once a year.

X2 - I overextended my gear and sheared the bolt in the square tube that drives power to the side opposite the motor. I also carry spare bolts and can literally perform this repair is about 10 minutes. Not sure if this is your problem but if so $900 is highway robbery. IMO pretty much any landing gear repair @ $900 is robbery. The entire gear can be bought for a couple hundred and swapped out in no more than a couple hours.
  • I had a similar problem and replaced the dual legs with Ultra-Fab independent legs so I could level the 5ver on rough terrain. These are OK but would rather had the BullDog set instead.
  • SO I picked this up but the tech was not there to show me the used parts but the short of it is that I have a new complete leg assembly on the trailer.

If I was not still moving, if my tools were not still in storage and if I did not have the City breathing down my neck I would probably have tried to figure out the repair.

Because the pin/bolt worked it's way out it mangled another bolt so it didn't look like an easy fix even for the guys so I'll just keep an eye on it and next time I have it serviced I'll be sure to keep this unit checked on.
