I had one fail on an Outback fiver. It wasn't the pin though. The tack weld that holds the spring cylinder onto the leg bracket failed.
When I took the weight off of the leg somewhere in the Sawtooth Mountains, the pin (and spring housing) went shooting across the parking lot. Coat hanger wire kept the lower leg up until I could get to a hardware store and get a 7/16" x 2-1/2" bolt with double nuts to use for the rest of the trip.
I, too, think it may have been the shear pin (shear bolt?) in the cross shaft.
