It was the pin that you pull to let the foot drop. The pin is spring loaded.
The broken off half was still in the square upper tube. They retracted the leg up until it jammed. Then they jacked up the frame and extended the leg until we could see a deformed hole and what looked like a piece of jagged metal.
The owner poked at it and the it poked out the other side.
In retrospect, I think that maybe the pin did not extend all the way through and it had just caught the edge of the opposing hole.
Maybe if he had wiggled the pin to ensure that it was all the way in then the failure might not have occurred. ???
