Personally, I "bump" my landing gear a couple times with the switch, after I drop the extensions, to be sure the pins snap into place. I =have= had them literally slide over a hole once or twice when on unlevel ground which, IMO, causes the holes to be just enough out of alignment that the pin won't slide into the hole in the extension.
