DutchmenSport I think for the dollars you are prepared to spend, and the size of the roof area on your RV, that a solar/battery/inverter system might be possible. Use the space allotted, for the generator, for an LI 48 volt battery bank. Plan for 72 hours of reserve capacity, based on a "real life" consumption test.
For "back up" power move the existing inverter to the tow vehicle. That would be a last ditch solution for power. Or you could do a 1000 to 2000 watt portable generator (unnecessary I think) stored in the bed of the truck.
If you still decide on a generator, I'd go propane and increase fuel storage so that there is enough fuel for 72 hours. (based on the real life consumption).
