For "back up" power move the existing inverter to the tow vehicle. That would be a last ditch solution for power. Or you could do a 1000 to 2000 watt portable generator (unnecessary I think) stored in the bed of the truck.
If you still decide on a generator, I'd go propane and increase fuel storage so that there is enough fuel for 72 hours.
Wow ,72 hours , looking at what , 6-7 40 lb. tanks , maybe a bit less ,but still . ?? Is their other options on tanks that he could haul ??
