Long Island Area

From those in the area or with experience, do I need to worry about navigating our 37’ 5th wheel to any of the parks on Long Island?? Will be coming from Philly, and looking at Battle Row Campground near Old Bethpage. We’ve been FT since last August so have moved this rig around a lot of places so far.

  • I live on Long Island and I also own a 32' travel trailer. I use the navigation App called Copilot, it keeps me off the parkways and away from low bridges. It works well.... so far. We also use a paper map.

We love LI, but we hate hate HATE the drive thru New York City. The roads thru NYC are some of the worst in the country and oddly enough we pay some of the highest to taxes in the country as well. We are planning to move away as soon as my daughter finishes school.

We just bought a FW its 12'. You need to follow truckers routes. I was nervous about driving coming up from a TT, so I bought the Rand McNally Truckers Map. REGULAR GPS WILL NOT HAVE LOW BRIDGE OR LOW CLEARANCES. Almost weekly there is news of a truck on a parkway or stuck under a bridge here. Lots of low things to hit.

We just returned from buying it and our route was I80 to the George Washington Bridge to Cross Bronx to Throgsneck Bridge to Clearview Expressway to Long Island Expressway.

In the future I will be getting an RV or Truckers GPS.

Most of those "RV" or "Truckers" GPS units only have about 1500 low clearance points. Route 1 has > 8,000 for N. America.

  • Check into the Route 1 low clearance database. Works with all major GPS units as well as Google and Apple maps. $75 for all of N. America with lifetime updates. > 8,000 data points. See www.lowclearances.com for more info. No, I don't work for them.

  • Thank you all for the info and the heads up on “parkways”!
  • I take the George Washington Bridge to Cross Bronx Expressway to Throgs Neck Bridge and to Clearview Expressway to 495E. The best time to do this with the least amount of traffic is very early in the am on a weekend day.

Do you have a reservation for Battle Ground, could be hard to get a spot if not.
  • Just to re-enforce the PARKWAY statement above....its a height clearance issue and you don't want to get wedged under a bridge! Don't ask how I know this!!! No, I didn't get wedged but I did get pulled over by State Police.
  • DO NOT TAKE ANY PARKWAYS..

Best bet may be Outter Bridge , BQE - 495 E - I travel to Bethpage every 4 weeks from NE Philly area, but never with the camper...

DO not take the Verizanno to Belt parkway to southern states parkway.... your directions may try to keep taking you that way, but your too tall... some of those bridges are 10'
