A long trip is nothing but a bunch of day trips put together. One is never far from a garage. The luck of the draw is getting a good one. Preventative maintenance is the cheapest option. Get a thorough once over by your trusted garage before you go but that is no guarantee of a trouble free trip.
Recently back from a Maryland to Pacific NW trip with our 06 Chevy towing a 13,000# trailer. 2nd trip there. Done Alaska, twice. 135,000 on the truck. It is in the prime of its life as far as I am concerned. Nothing but normal wear & tear replacements. Brake pads & rotors, ball joints, that sort of thing. No engine issues.
