Looking for advice on Aljo Skyline replacement?

hi,

i currently own a 2001 aljo skyline toy hauler, and am considering moving up to a larger / newer rig. we have had zero problems with our current rig, so i'm thinking of staying with skyline if possible.

looking around online it appears as though skyline only makes pretty big rigs now (26' +), and i only want to move up into the 24' range.

so my questions are as follows:

1. for a 24' trailer (5th wheel not option as i have shell on my truck) what else does skyline offer if anything?
2. i found a 24' 240 Freestyle, but it's priced at the same level as all of the 2013/2014 units from other manufacturers. thoughts on this particular rig if anyone else has one?
3. if Aljo is not a good choice anymore, what do others recommend?

our usage is as follows:

-2 adults, 2 dogs, and no kids
-will be used for both atv and MC riding
-entertainment options not interesting (i.e. not looking for tv/satellite, radio is about it and even that is low pri)
-gas station is a must
-large gas tank a must
-large fresh water is a must
-would like larger grey and black than we have now
-ladders up to bed over garage not ideal, would like to get away from that
-we don't need to sleep 10 people, 4 is the norm, and 6 the exception
-the current rig has NO storage, would like to upgrade in that regard if possible
-weight of rig not a huge deal, i have a diesel and the current rig
is HEAVY

TIA for any/all feedback and suggestions
D

  • drick, twice hard to say. Twice compared to some other units, yes. I just sold my F150 and bought a Jeep, amazed how well they hold their value. Is it worth it? Time will tell, but the reality is that if that is what the market is getting then there must be a reason behind it. I totally agree with soulraider there is no doubt that their amenities or "fluff" isn't as current or hip as some of the new rigs, they are heavy units and I believe they are built a bit better then most. It's been my impression they are not here for the flash but the long term use. Go winter camping and you'll see a bunch of Desert Fox and Artic Fox units out in the woods, and by no means are they new ones but they've been dependable. Now take that all with the knowledge that I've never owned one, just that I've camped with a number of people with them over the years.
  • They come up for sale around here fairly regularly. I personally think they are a little overpriced for what you get, but some people swear by their quality. I think they have a strong reputation for quality, no doubt. I've always just thought their amenities, along with overall style have been a bit behind the market.

Guaranty RV in Junction City sells them new.

  • Y guy, thanks for context.

Do you think the brand is worth the 2x premium?
  • Few reason you won't find many, they are popular and sell fast, they are not mass produced so they don't flood the market in the first place and their owners hang on to them. Friend of our had one of the big 5ers, they were forced to sell. Priced it fair, they had 3 full prices offers the first week, first guy that looked at it bought it.
  • wow, just took a look at those and they are 2x + the cost of anything else I've been able to find.

There are also none available on rvtrader which seems odd to me.

thanks for the suggestions, I'll do some more research.
  • I'll second the Desert Fox line up. From a quality perspective I think they will match or surpass the Skyline. They are a small, but strong, company based on Oregon and weathered the recession well by pulling back but not giving up. For a while Skyline ceased all Toy Hauler production, I still haven't confirmed they even have Toy Haulers now, their website is horrible for finding things on I've found.
