Making the LT tire jump

So I've been reading a bunch and decided on BF Goodrich Commercial AS 2 in LT215/85R16 for my rig, I'm ordering wheels very shortly, most likely the same ones that are on it now, but in 16" instead of 15".

Right now I have ST225/75R15's on my 5er and they are rated at 2450lbs @ 80PSI - the new tires are rated at 2680lbs @ 80PSI so I'm actually increasing the total tire capacity over what came with the unit - I'm extremely comfortable with that.

Another point worth noting is that the new size will be 2" larger in diameter so it will provide me an additional inch worth of lift (to go along with the 1" adjustment that I had done to my rig in the fall) to make the 5er sit perfectly level with the TV. (I was 2" nose high, for those who know me they would know I can't live with that being very OCD)

Wheels I'm ordering next week:

I had 4.3" between before, i'll now have 2.3" spacing which as I understand is acceptable. I've also got plenty of clearance above - the 5er is now 1" higher between the flood and axles so the extra inch of tire height will not be an issue. I've spent the last 3 months pouring over every detail and measurement to make sure everything will work and I'm 100% confident with this setup.

those wheels are rates @ 3200lbs/80PSI VS the stock 15's that are rated at 2830lbs/80PSI.

For what its worth, all 16x6 wheels with the 6x5.5 bolt patern seem to hold the same 3200lbs/80PSI ratings.

My unit currently has the Sendal T06GM 15x6 wheels.

  • Definitely a good move if all the measurements work out. I know I would want more tire under a rig that size and not dealing with ST tire issues will be such a relief. Good Luck!!!
  • 2.3" is plenty. That's what I have with mine. That's why I have hard time finding any tires to replace my current 225/75/15. I'd be down to 1" between if I did.
  • Tire spacing is going to become your big issue. Most people don't up size their tires for that reason.
  • I hope you won't have any clearance issues with the larger tire.

And make sure those new rims are rated to take tire pressures at least up to 100 PSI. Don't assume. If you think a tire exploding is bad, having a rim come apart is MUCH worse.
