I did the same thing almost.Had a couple of panels that had fabric that covered a thin board that was stapled in an opening, Popped the panel loose....added some hinges and little knob and mounted it outside the opening.....no it swings open and lets me use that storage area. Under the stove was a panel also....popped it out and mad a storage drawer for pots and pans there.
