You do NOT want to use an exhaust break when driving on snow or ice. This can cause the drive wheels to lose traction and cause you to lose control when descending a grade. Make sure you have chains for the truck and for 1 axle of the trailer. I have driven I-5 between LA and Seattle more times than I can count and in the winter it is not bad unless you are in the middle of a storm. I can tell you that descending the Siskiou grade northbound toward Ashland in an 80,000lb 18 wheeler with no chains and about 3 inches of packed ice and snow on the road is no fun at all. Took me an hour to go 5 miles. Thats where I got my Merit Badge!!
