It's a lot easier to connect to the internet on the phone sans wifi. That's one thing I can think of. Another is that you can find things that many GPS cannot. My experience with Garmin is that it's really devoid of information about small towns. And they're a whole lot easier to carry than a laptop. Of course if you have no use for any of that, then your standard phone or laptop is fine. I'm just pointing out that it's wise to use all the tools available to you when traveling, not eschewing them as some sort of curse.
I carry paper maps and books too, including 3 laptops. Everything has its place.
