A/C units are 2 parts, the compressor side, which takes outside air and runs it over the compressor coils to cool them, and the air-handling side, which is where the compressed refrigerant expands to cool; the inside air is pulled over these coils and exhausted back into the interior. They are separate and (supposedly) sealed off from each other.
