Never thought we'd ever consider a 5er... but!!!!

Keystone Alpine, 3700 FL

In the process of discovery right now.

Wife and I went to our local dealership (Modern Trailer, in Anderson, Indiana), which is only about 6 miles from our house to get a propane tank fill up about a month ago. While there we decided to do some window shopping! WRONG MOVE!

We looked inside the Alpine 3801 FK (Front Kitchen) Click here. and fell instantly in love. We then steped into the 3700FL and about keeled over. Both of these 5ers are fabulous. But we REALLY like that front living room.

I know, these babies are over 40 feet long. Their initial list price is $89,000. Talked to the dealer a little at that first initial visit and he said they could do much better on price. We took the information and been watching, dreaming, talking, and internet searching for the 3700FL.

Well, I went back yesterday for some Dicor Sealant for some touch up work on my Outback and of course, had to stop in and see the FL model. It was gone! Sold.

I talked to the dealer and found out they let it go for $69,000, whoever bought it, financed it it for $42,000 and did a trade in. So, there's hope here.

Dealer also said it would be about 3 weeks before they get another one on their lot, and if we wait till August, they are running a Keystone Days special, where Keystone will throw in a 5er hitch for no extra charge. (Of course, I'll need to do homework on this first).

So, I have an oil change planned for tomorrow on my 3500 duly diesel tomorrow. While there, I'm taking the stats from this FL model and going to talk to my mechanic about my truck and what I can expect.

Meanwhile, we fell in love! We're looking at selling out everything within the next 3 year, I'm retiring, and we're going full timing. So, we're in the planning stages now.

I never thought I'd ever even consider a 5er, and one like is, well.... it's now consumed me and it's all I can think about. My wife is ready to trade right now! I'm being a bit more cautious. I want my ducks in order first. (finances, tow vehicle, and future plans).

I feel pretty certain, the combined length of my current truck and trailer (59.5 feet) won't be any longer than the combined length of the 40 footer 5er with truck, considering the hitch is forward in the bed of the truck. So, I'm pretty certain, overall length will be close. Still, doing the math and exploration stages now. Anyway, will need to wait till August anyway. August would be a great time frame for a purchase.

Thoughts anyone?

I know, with slides in, the floor plan looks like the kitchen access is restricted. I'd like to see the actual camper with all the slides in before making any permanent decisions. That's the only draw back I see so far.

  • Lots of responses here and all good advice. Funny, we too never thought we would have one of those monster fifth wheels we'd see while we were traveling, but after looking at a Class A we changed our minds. The Class A made me car sick and the storage for us was minimal. Smart for you to consider it with the slides in, having had four previous travel trailers before purchasing the FW, we had the salesman bring in the slides several times while we imagined what it would be like to stop en route at a road side rest for lunch, or sleep at a truck stop while on the road. In our unit, we can do everything, but get in the living room, with all the slides in. I can open the fridge, cook, use the shower, restroom, and get on the bed. There's room for the dogs too with all the slides in.

My only one word of advice is to never love anything that can't love you back. Instead of falling in love with that Alpine, step back and objectively look at it and be open to change. You've got time to look, but once you've purchased it'll be more difficult to change if you're not pleased.

With that said, though, I don't blame you for being excited. I would too! We can't get enough of this lifestyle and it is a lifestyle. We spend money on things that others think are expensive. Just maintenance alone can be spendy especially for those things that you can't or won't do yourself.

Have fun and keep us posted.
  • "Falling in love" with an RV is a red flag to this old wise RVer. Generally it means you are considering a purchase with emotion rather than reason. Don't buy their talk about "letting it go" for $$$. That just means they didn't get as much as they would like no doubt still a good profit. When they see that you're "in love with it", they've got you.
  • A few thoughts:
    - I like the front living layout. I would see about if they could mount a screen on the front wall and install a projector instead of the TV rising up from the cabinet. That could up your TV to around 80" (might need blackout shades on the side windows). At the same time you get valuable cabinet space back.
    - The slides blocking access to bathroom, bedroom and much of the kitchen are an issue (assuming the layout appearance is correct). This probably be a deal breaker for us if we planned to move frequently.
    - Will you be having frequent guests? The half bath seems overkill if it's just the two of you heading out.

  • My thought about the 3700 floor plan is that it would be fabulous if you are stationary most of the time....but, if you are on the road I doubt that you could use the frig or get into the bathroom with the slides in...
    Just a thought.
    Good luck with your choice.
  • Love that 3700FL. Bath and a half. Two sinks in master bath. Great looking lounge up front. Seems to live more like a home. Good luck with your search.
  • Dutchmen, one thing to look at.
Go look at your truck bed, consider everything you have in there now, with that big shell protecting it all.
    Want to give that up?

That seems to be your biggest question left, aside from the bill that is, hehe

    Happy motorin
  • Hee Hee Hee - just as I have preached to all my kids:

    "Looking" turns into "Wanting"
    "Wanting" turns into "Needing"
    "Needing" turns into "Must have"
    "Must have" turns into.

    "Cant Do Without"

  • Just me, for that money you can find a higher end very lightly used 5th wheel. Alpine, and Montana, are the upper end of the Keystone high production models. I've been looking at used DRV, Carriage, and Landmarks.
Whatever you do I would get full body paint. It's an option on Alpine and I think Montana as well. If you will be full timing it will be exposed to the elements 24/7 and the filon will oxidize and look like **** in 3 or 4 years.
Look over on the Keystone forum and see what is said about quality.
