New Battery Question....

Hi everyone, First let me say Merry Christmas to all of our fellow RV'ers. Now for the question, we have to purchase a new house battery for our '08 Montana and were wondering what "Size" or type to get. We do not do any dry-camping, other than an overnight stop while traveling. I know we do not want to constantly "check" water levels either. So any suggestions ?? Thanks
  • How often do you check your car battery? Can you check your car battery? Many are sealed no maintenance batterys.

Since you are not a dry camper the expense of an AGM or Gel Cell no maintenance is tough to justify. The cheapest route would be a couple of 6V golf cart batterys & a disconnect switch. The switch eliminates the need to have the unit on a constant trickle charge when not in use for more than a week & reduces the amount of gassing requiring water level checks.
  • If your converter is charging correctly, you should not have to check the water constantly. I check mine in my flooded cell deep cycle Group 31's every 3 months and I have yet to have to add water though I probably will this spring in as much as the unit is shore powered and in inside storage right now.

Batteries consume water (gas off) only when overcharged or are rapidly discharged. A good converter and reasonable discharge rates and a conventional battery will 'consume' little water.
