New Tires

In your post you state the tires were five years old, did you check the date stamp on the tire? They could be closer to 6 years old from date of manufacture! Anything over five, in my opinion, should be checked for cracking and dry rot at least annually. Both from personal knowledge and in reading the posts here, I have seen tires with perfectly good tread blow out from dry rot or some other issue! I would spend the $$ on "good" tires. I just got the repair estimate from my insurance company, $3k in damage caused by a tire failure!
