New truck.....now what?

I just bought a new to me 2012 Ram 3500 Dually 4*4. This truck sits higher than my 2004 ram did. I am going to have new 5th wheel rails installed but how do I get the correct highth to clear the bed of my new truck?

  • Measure bed height from previous truck. Adjust hitch up or down to attain level of previous setup. If your new truck sits two inches higher than previous truck, lower hitch two inches. If you cannot get enough adjustment out of your hitch, you may have to raise or lower your pin box.

Keep in mind, any adjustments you do, will effect the clearance between bottom of 5er and truck bed rails. Your ideal clearance is around 6" plus or minus according to your setup and whether or not you travel always on pavement or off road. The more clearance you have gives the fiver more room to move when towing over uneven terrain, driveways, fuel stations, construction zones.

Others will chime in here and give you more valuable information. Good luck and enjoy your new truck.

  • Lots of people run into this issue with the newer trucks. Truck manufacturers and RV manufacturers really need talk to each other and figure this one out because right now you would be hard pressed to buy any of the big three new HD trucks and hook them up to a 5er that sits level.

    You have several options.

-Lower the back of the truck with lowering shackles
-Raise the pinbox as high as it will go on the 5er. But need to keep an eye on bed rail clearance. Similarly lower the hitch head if its adjustable on your hitch.
    - If none of that works, your only option is to raise the trailer at the axles.
  • Adjust the pin box height or the height of the axles.
