Newbees

Hello everyone, we are new to RVing.  I have a question. Does anyone know of a USA map that has detailed roads for each state? We will be traveling through 5 states and need to know which routes are good for fifth wheels.

  • One more thought, a USA map wouldn’t be detailed sufficiently for RVing. Racing across the continent, yes.

I beg to differ with you. Do you have one? Do you have a new one? Do you even know how to look at a map and read the map or do you just use your cell phone?

You must have missed my other postings on this. Army map reading wasn’t much easier after M&Ds tutoring.

  • All good info. Shame the OP never returned to get the information they asked for.

  • I didn’t learn map reading in school but my parents’ method probably isn’t taught either. They’d throw a map to the back seat and ask where we were. Home, of course. Then every hour or so…where are we? Brother and I learned. I remember the first time little brother said, “why didn’t we go this way?”

  • The road map I sugjested is the Trucker Road map and it is full of information on just about all roads that they can travel, loaded or unloaded. All the weigh stations are in it and phone numbers for other information. I used to drive semi and had one in the truck. Now I have one for whenever I travel and reading one is easy when you know how. I realize they don't teach this in schools anymore but these are a good thing to have.

for general roads, I would say so. with the rise of Android auto and car play, almost everyone can have a real time gps system in their vehicles that is realy never out of date.  besides, I don't think anyone misses there significant other trying to be the navagator and messing up all the directions, it used to me a lesson in patience for me 🤣

I think the only paper maps I use now are the BRMB I don't need them with the 5th wheel as most of the forestry sites are to small or rough for it to get to.  but when I take off with the truck and camper this is what I am using to find my spot.

  • Which 5 states? Are you staying to interstates or back roads? Very few places anymore that you won't be able to go and if they aren't accessible, you'll be warned well in advance.

Btw, I cringe as I write this knowing the OP ain't coming back. I'd like to be wrong.

  • Go to a major truck stop and buy the road map book with the plastic covered pages!! It has every road in the U.S. by state and by cities. Also Canada is in the book.

another bonus with the lamanated pages is you can buy china markers (colored hardened wax pencils) and draw your route on them, or mark stops and points of interest with different colors, when planing, so you can find them easy on the road

Besides using Google Maps on my Pro Max sized phone, I couldn't travel without my Rand McNally large print map book!  While driving it's nice to be able to glance further ahead than Google shows and see what towns are ahead for fuel, meals, etc. and also road crossings/intersections hours ahead.

  • I don't know what you guys have down there, but up here for main roads I use google maps but that wouldn't be spicific for 5th wheels.  there are some gps software that is for truckers or rv's that you can enter stuff like your hight and it will pick routs that you won't have to worry about.  Can I remember the names of them right now, nope haha..  but if you search there are some apps like co piliot that lets you enter dimentions, or ones like smart truck route which is geared more for highway haulers but will let you enter dimentions weight and so on, but that one comes at a cost in the form of a subscription plan.  if you want to spend more you can buy some standalone gps units which you can imput all thoes.
