No Aux Lights on Trailer_Brakes have power

Need some guidance from the pros. My lights on my 5th wheel do not work. Tested the 7 pin connector and I have 12v power to the brakes but not the lights. Check what fuses I think would be relevant and they were ok. Its just no power to the light connections. 2006 Ford F250. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • You maybe able to "steal" a fuse from some function not being used. Do not use larger fuse. Wipers, radio, etc. Maybe one out of rig.
    Hopefully that fuse won't blow!
  • Hi,

Check your RV converter/charger fuse center. My new Fleetwood had three extra fuse locations with no wires to them, however Fleetwood installed new 20 amp fuses in 2 of the 3 extra spaces. It is handy to have a extra fuse when you need one.

If you are ever out camping, and need the brake light fuse to get back home, remember that most of the trailer fuses can be taken out, unless it is the fuse that powers the refrigerator controls or the CO and propane meter that also needs power to run the refrigerator while driving home.

Now you just need to figure out why the fuse blows after several years of towing without it ever blowing. Check around the trailer hitch, look for a loose wire there, that might have either pulled out and allowed the bare copper to touch ground, or a loose wire under the RV that has rubbed through it's insulation and now is just a direct wire to the trailer frame someplace, instead of the light bulb itself. Another less common problem is actually inside the bulb fixture, and is repaired from either replacing the entire fixture, or repair the wires within the fixture, if you are good at that stuff.

Verify that the truck is wired for an RV and not a utility/horse trailer.
Blade style (RV) connectors are wired differently then round pin connectors(Utility/horse trailer).
Verify the grounds are good on both ends.
Look under the hood for fuses that control the trailer lights. Check owner's manual for correct location. There could be two fuses for each function. Brake lights are fused for turn signals.

I've been towing with this truck since it was new without any problems. Just this last trip i have no lights. Constant power is at 12v and brakes are at 12v.....just not lights. Fuses seem ok. I'll check under the hood to see if there are any fuses there. manual is pretty vague in this regard

  • Hi,

This might help, it give the correct location of the 7 wires within the connector on the back of your truck.

On my Ford Edge, with factory towing package, the trailer turn/brake lights have separate fuses from the lights that are mounted on the car. So open the fuse box cover, and look for something that might say "Trailer light fuse".
