Just the geometry says some of the weight will always transfer forward, unlike a bumper pull. If the hitch is correctly installed in the bed, never ever would hitching up a 5th wheel unload the front axle. True?
Industry "STANDARD" is 2" in front of the centerline of the rear axle. I had always been a firm believer in that. I have wavered some on that. If you have a short bed and a heavy Cummins and 4wd I see no problem removing a bit of front axle weight by going behind the axle.
I don't think a few inches in front or behind the rear axle makes much difference, especially as you say on a diesel 4wd truck. My truck squats the same with my Andersen flipped to the front as it does when it's flipped to the back. I'm sure there's a marginal difference in the front axle weight between the two but it certainly isn't material. Now if you compare these options to moving the hitch point 4'+ back to the rear hitch in a TT setup, that's a material difference.
