For me onboard is built in although I had an on board that was on a rear platform on my prior RV and was not truly built in.
The rear platform genset worked great but it was not as convenient as my current Onan. I had to plug RV into the genset. I also had to occasionally refill the genset using potable cans.
My current onboard unit is an Onan LP model. I don't have to do anything but push a button. There is nothing to plug in or anything else to do.
The genset draws fuel from the onboard propane tanks. I don't carry any additional gas/fuel cans.
The built in is very convenient. All I do is push a button and I have full power to use both A/C's etc. I don't have to plug in,refuel, set anything up or do anything else.
The Onan is not the cheapest, quietest or most efficient.
However it is the most convenient. Convenience is what a built in genset is all about.
So, you have LP delivery to your camp site or do you have to wrestle your tanks around to fill them? I think it's easier to fill gas cans than LP tanks. (Sorry, just sort of bustin' your chops on this. :-) )
