Open Range VS Montana

Well I have owned a 2003, 2006, 2010 and now a 2015 Montana and have had no problems with any of them. I traded the 2010 for a 2013 Heartland Landmark and it was a POS something stayed tore up on it all the time. The 2015 Montana Legacy is really a nice 5th wheel. I have the level system and all bells and whistles.
Montana would get my VOTE

Open Range for us...love this 5th wheel. As for warranty, we bought it used (4 yrs old). It had been used ONCE by an older gentleman that figured out it was too much for him. It sat for 4 yrs -- waiting for us. :B. The only thing that wasn't new on it was the warranty, but we don't NEED a warranty with it.....it's not had ONE thing wrong with it!!!!! :)

We have a 2013 Open Range and are very happy the quality and company support. The two year warranty is a plus also, although we only had a couple of minor claims. Do check out www.openrangeowners.com and you're get unvarnished opinions about the brand.

Both are good rigs. Pick the one you like and then wait 1 year to buy it used. Will save you about $15000. If you buy one 2-3 years old you will save $5000-$10000 more. They are all boxes on wheels put together with staples and screws. No real difference between a 2016 and a 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011........

We went to the Hershey show to specifically see an Open Range rear kitchen and I am not that impressed. Their sales pitch is how light they are.
I do not like the idea of the cable slide out on rooms that big. The cable bracket attachment point on the outside of the slide out looks like a problem waiting to happen. About 6 screws in a 4" long bracket. Wait until they pull out if the slide ever gets hung up. There would be nowhere to refasten the bracket.
Decided that with the big slide out rooms nothing would beat reliability of gear drive.

The section sample of the walls and floor they had there also doesn't look good. I can't see having two layers of luaun as being structural sub floor.


Without exception every Montana/Keystone 5'er we went into gave off chemical fumes to the point they made our eyes water. No other rigs we looked at did that.

They are both in the same price range use the same vendors and are built by the same workforce. You will have build quality problems with both. Purchase the floorplan that suits you best and good luck.
