If you're looking at one for a new 5th wheel be sure to check the warranty. Some companies will void the warranty if you use an adapter.
IMO it depends on the size and weight of the 5th wheel in question. You might get by fine with a smaller/lighter 5th wheel. Using one on a 38' 16,000 lb. 5th wheel wouldn't be a good idea, IMO.
My brother used one to haul his 31' 5th wheel and boat from Iowa to Minnesota every year and had no issues. Not a huge boat, and the small 5th wheel had no slides. YMMV.
