Our camping trailer came with the usual couch-which-folds-out-into-an-uncomfortable-bed. Hardly ever did any one sit on it, and the occasional sleep-over cursed the fact if they had to sleep on it ...

Now that's a good idea! If I were to buy another fiver I'd specify it same as you. I've never used the sofa bed in my couch and never will. It's just extra useless weight to haul around. It's mighty tempting to get rid of it and put some lighter piece of furniture in its place. Procrastinator that I am I'll probably not do it (soon). :B
